7. Them Saturday Nights
Expect to see alot of this band’s live recordings show up here…not because they’re immensely popular, but because this is the shit! After just one show, I think the Mopar Mountain Daredevils are my second favorite local band (Heroin UK is firmly entrenched at number one). Next Mopar Mountain show is December 6 at the Talking Head with Bardo Pond. I’m there!
Despite the very early start time of 6:30pm, I went to check out Justin’s presentation on Beatbots as a cultural container. It was good. Nothing groundbreaking, but he did mention my name so that made it all worthwhile.
Gary Kachadourian, from the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, opened up the night with a discussion of a variety of art projects around the city. I particularly enjoyed the front porch-back porch concept (no house or resident, just a front and back porch).
I enjoyed Michael Benevento’s presentation, which was primarily about The Current Gallery and the Carroll Mansion. I loved the content, though he should have talked about the live shows they host sporadically (like HCON 2008 this Saturday, Nov 8: Small Sur, Microkingdom, Wax & Wane, The New Flesh, Hollywood, The Ruined Frame and lots more). The Current Gallery is such a great spot for shows, right down at the harbor, and they’ve had some good ones.
I really liked the presentation on the Baltimore Round Robin by Rose Chase. While I’d read lots of great reviews of the tour, it turns out I didn’t know squat about what they do. It was an eye opener and is actually making me re-think my decision to tape the tour when it comes to Baltimore on December 18 & 19 at Sonar. I’d love to see it, but the description sounds too chaotic and problematic. Very rarely do I go to shows in which I’m not taping, and this tour could be the first in several years.

Lisa Reed’s presentation closed the night with a very informative talk about the Everyman Theatre. I liked the old photos from Charles and LaFayette.
