i just came from their concert in damrosch park at lincoln center, nyc. on a scale of 1 to 10, i must use the cliche of 12. of course, that’s for the whole night, but this part of the show, the headliner (over mahmoud ahmed? how is that possible?) was truly a blowout. if you’re in the ethiopean section of the audience, you just don’t bother sitting down for either set–dance or get trampled. i’m over 50 and moved like i was 18. infectious, energizing and inventive in every direction. Mekurya had them in the palm of his hand, and reed, from the giddyup. how is it that the crazy slashing punk rock rhythms could meld so well with the east african, especially their wind/horn section, w/a clarinet player who could teach john zorn and eric dolphy and even mickey katz something about skronk and klezmer. and who is that wild dancer with them? he stand in one spot and vibrates, does a sabre dance (actually a dagger, but still…) i mean, they had to pull the plug on them after the third encore. so that’s what i’m doing here. wfmu was broadcasting it live but it ain’t on now. so you’re my only hope to keep the buzz going.
