If you missed it last time around, don’t be the fool a second time. Heavy Hands is from NYC, playing psychedelic rock. Fantastic set!

I’m sure all the bands were great at this show. Unfortunately, due to a prior commitment, I was only able to tape Engine’s opening set. I’ve taped Oxter a couple of times and absolutely love them. I haven’t see Damn Right yet, though I know I’d love them since one of the guys from Basshound is in the band.

When Engine had wrapped up their set, and I was breaking down my gear to leave, I was talking with someone about the Engine set and this guy looks as me and says, “I don’t get it?”I get it, I just don’t know how to put it into words, so I say, as I usually say about bands consisting of 14 year old boys, “What the hell, they’re kids.”
In truth, I love this stuff and think these guys are awesome at what they do. But I can totally understand when people look at me and wonder “what is this shit?”

You always remember your first time. In taping, my first time was October 12, 2004: Kinder of Evolution (K.O.E.) opened at the Funkbox. It’s funny how little has changed: I didn’t stick around to tape the headliner at that show (Bio Ritmo), just as I didn’t stick around for the three bands that played after K.O.E. at this show (Zen Black, The Fif, and The Speaks). I was also very fortunate to catch the first band open this past weekend at Ram’s Head Live, The Getaways.

It’s been awhile since I last taped K.O.E., Nov 30, 2005 at Ryleigh’s Pub in Federal Hill. They’ve always given excellent performances, as evidenced in their most recent show, but they don’t sound so raw with their funk anymore. They’re definitely more refined, adding some horns into the arrangements, but the first couple of times I saw K.O.E., I really liked how they just hung it out on stage. As always, K.O.E. brings the funk, though they throw plenty of salsa, hip hop and rock onto the bowl.

You can access the recording of this show on The Live Music Archive. As always, you can access K.O.E.’s live archive of shows here.

NOTE: The Live Music Archive has been experiencing major disruption issues the past few months, so access might be spotty. If you don’t get in now, try later.

A few of my less than stellar videos from the show:

Show opened with a new song, “Last Writes”

“La Busquera”, with horns, was played third

Not new new, but new to me, was “Embrace Your Surroundings”

Video, Audio, News : Greetings!

February 15th, 2008

My name is Mark Brown and I’m honored to be contributing to the Beatbots A/V Club.

Let me tell you a bit about myself while doing some shameless promo: I’m a recent MICA graduate (of the Interactive Media Department), a member of the Wham City Artist Collective For The Promotion of Progressive Gatherings, co-founder of the experimental music and video happening Are We Not Men?!, and manager of the Cage & Media Lab @ The Creative Alliance.

I make experimental animations and conduct live video experiments at social gatherings around Baltimore and beyond. I’m also a DJ. The following piece is an animation I created for Dan Deacon

While I’m sure I gave out copies of this set, I’m not sure I ever posted it online. Lots of excellent music at this Whartscape, and looking back on it, I’d have to say this set by CEX was my favorite from the festival. The recording cuts off about three minutes before CEX decided to call it a night (I called it a night three minutes earlier).

Note: I had originally mixed up the name of the DJ, assuming it was DJ XXXchange when it was actually DJ Rockswell. Unfortunately, when I named the last mp3 file for this set, I reverted back to my past mistake and mis-identified DJ Rockswell as DJ XXXchange.

I wrote in the info file for this show that this set was my favorite. Turns out, it was one of many favorites from Whartscape. Also in the running would be sets by Soft Circle, Growing, and, of course, Ponytail. I’ll be posting my favorite set from Whartscape soon.

Dance punk, or moog rock, from Montreal…Duchess Says takes off in one of my favorite sets recorded at The Talking Head. While there are many touring bands that I’d like to see come back to Baltimore, Montreal probably leads the list as home to alot of those bands.

hello hello hello,

This is a trailer for a collaboration film between me and Human Host. I did all the visuals and they did all the audio. The full film is about eighteen minutes long and consists of warped footage I shot with a hidden camera inside of three malls in Baltimore (Towson, the Gallery, and the Rotunda). There is no story. We’ll be screening it at Charm City Art Space in March and some other places later on, and it’s going to be released on DVD by local label Human Conduct around the same time.
