Video, Audio : Kinder of Evolution: Ram’s Head Live; Baltimore, MD February 15, 2008
You always remember your first time. In taping, my first time was October 12, 2004: Kinder of Evolution (K.O.E.) opened at the Funkbox. It’s funny how little has changed: I didn’t stick around to tape the headliner at that show (Bio Ritmo), just as I didn’t stick around for the three bands that played after K.O.E. at this show (Zen Black, The Fif, and The Speaks). I was also very fortunate to catch the first band open this past weekend at Ram’s Head Live, The Getaways.
It’s been awhile since I last taped K.O.E., Nov 30, 2005 at Ryleigh’s Pub in Federal Hill. They’ve always given excellent performances, as evidenced in their most recent show, but they don’t sound so raw with their funk anymore. They’re definitely more refined, adding some horns into the arrangements, but the first couple of times I saw K.O.E., I really liked how they just hung it out on stage. As always, K.O.E. brings the funk, though they throw plenty of salsa, hip hop and rock onto the bowl.
You can access the recording of this show on The Live Music Archive. As always, you can access K.O.E.’s live archive of shows here.
NOTE: The Live Music Archive has been experiencing major disruption issues the past few months, so access might be spotty. If you don’t get in now, try later.
A few of my less than stellar videos from the show:
Show opened with a new song, “Last Writes”
“La Busquera”, with horns, was played third
Not new new, but new to me, was “Embrace Your Surroundings”
