Hunchback are a bunch of punks from New Brunswick, NJ. It’s a decent recording, though the vocals sound a bit low (especially compared to how the other sets turned out). I did have some guy kick my case towards the end of the show, resulting in a partially dislodged optical cable. Consequently, I dumped the last song rather than keep it in.

I like the current lineup, but feel like they’re holding back. To be honest, one of their best jams of the night was in the soundcheck and that didn’t make the cut for the final recording. Excellent version of Cutterhammer, but the show tails off from there. They should have a fourth tune, a more upbeat closer. But all in all, another kick ass set from Ecstatic Sunshine.

Lots of new shit from Baltimore’s nastiest punks. Problems with their drum pedal stopped the show during the first song for a little over six minutes. I could have deleted that part of the recording, most tapers probably would, but I prefer to have the recording reflect the total experience. Unless you were there (and the place was packed!), this track has little to offer the listener.

If you’re in the area, Double Dagger’s next show in Baltimore should be a can’t miss show with Ecstatic Sunshine and Parts & Labor at Floristree. That’s on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, doors probably around 9pm, show between 10-10:30pm. Sucks that it’s a weeknight, but that’s why God created sick leave.

Smart Growth is a side project of Dennis Bowen of Baltimore punk band Double Dagger. I’m not entirely sure what the deal is with Smart Growth, though what I think I know is that Denny creates beats based on someone else’s music (in this case, it’s The Police) and then plays drums over the beats and remixed music of the original source. Whatever it is he’s doing, it works!

Ponytail’s set at last year’s Whartscape was quite possibly the most joyous thing I’ve ever seen. Both the band and the crowd were exuding waves of positive vibrations. These videos document the last 20 odd minutes of their set … one for the ages.

I must have been more distracted at this show than I realized. I didn’t care for the PWRFL Power set, but when I subsequently listened to the recording, I found I liked it more than I thought.

Same goes for Teeth Mountain. While I enjoyed seeing their set, it didn’t blow me away like the music on their MySpace page did. But now that I listen to the recording, I like it alot more.

Teeth Mountain is from Baltimore and plays percussive noise (or something like that).

power.jpg

PWRFL Power is a Japanese guy from Seattle who plays the acoustic guitar.

To be totally honest, I had zero interest in sticking around for PWRFL Power…not because I didn’t like the music (I’d never heard it), but simply because it was a weeknight and I would rather go to bed. I came out for Needlegun, and being the first band I figured I’d be in and out. Then I listened to some of Teeth Mountain’s music and wanted to check them out as well. Unfortunately, Teeth Mountain was slotted to play third, so my in and out plan didn’t work out too well. I had every intention of leaving until someone I knew at the show said, “you should stay for this.” Against my better judgment, I stayed and didn’t really like it. I thought he played guitar well, but I wasn’t digging his quirky delivery and lyrics.

This recording is a perfect example of why I love taping. I really didn’t enjoy the show, but I really enjoy the recording of the show. Being there didn’t do anything for me. Maybe I was distracted alot during the set and that’s why I walked away thinking, “I can’t believe I stayed up for this crap.” But now that I’ve listened to it again, I like it. I don’t think I could listen to alot of it, but it’s very nice. But without taping, since I didn’t enjoy the show, I’d tell people it sucked. I can happily say that PWRFL Power doesn’t suck…at least not in this case.

For a moment, a very quick moment, I thought Bootsy Collins was in the house. As it turned out, Bootsy had other plans and it was Needlegun that put on the funk…well, funky noise anyway.

Needlegun is a very innovative band. Some mind call it genius. Some might call it 4-5 guys jacking off on stage. Whatever they’re doing, I like it. I like it alot. What I don’t like is that this is the second time I’ve seen them and they played only 15 minutes at both shows. Sure, they packed alot of shit in those fifteen minutes, but, come on. If someone walked outside, just as the band took the stage, and smoked a cigarette, by the time they came back in, the set was half over. I’ve seen this before, with one of my favorite local bands, The Degenerettes. They used to play 15, 20 minutes tops and always left the audience wanting more. I think in their case, it was more that the band didn’t have anything else to play. With Needlegun, you can’t use that excuse…this shit is improv and by the looks of it, they could have gone on all day.
