It was recently announced that Monarch had signed with Merge Records and changed their name to Wye Oak.

In the course of 12 hours one day last week, I had four people contact me about getting some Monarch shows re-posted. Typically, I might get one request a week. I’m more than happy to oblige whenever Monarch or Wye Oak is concerned…while they smoked as their normal electric duo at the Oct 7 Current Canyon Festival, the acoustic set they performed at the Oct 27 show at the Paper Kingdom is nothing short of amazing. You can download both shows here. At the end of this post is an audio player, so you can listen before you download.

The Jan 17 show at The Talking Head with Small Sur is gonna be awesome. The recordings of that show will quickly follow.

Here’s what Wye Oak (Monarch) is up to…

Merge Records will release the debut full-length, If Children, from Baltimore’s newly christened Wye Oak on April 8, 2008!

Wye Oak (formerly known as Monarch) are Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack. Jenn & Andy have been playing music together and apart in Baltimore, MD, and chose their name from the honorary state tree of Maryland.

If Children is the culmination of many months of recording, polishing and perfecting to achieve what Any Given Tuesday best described as, “. .. . mingling in a room full of shoegaze, alt-country, folk, and noise, shaking hands, kissing cheeks, and making friends with everyone.”

If Children is an exuberant debut – noisy and restrained in turn, Wye Oak describe their philosophy: “We’d like to think that if a song is good enough, it’ll stand on its own regardless of how much noise you pile on top. On the other hand, we do like noise.” Listen, and we think you will have to agree!

Check out an mp3 from If Children here:

And you can download a promo photo here!

If Children will be released on April 8, 2008. Wye Oak head south this weekend, and plan to tour throughout 2008 including a stop at SXSW!

I’m not sure what genre to pigeon-hole these local guys…indie progressive?

This set was ear bleedingly loud!! I think this was an error on the soundguy’s part, but it was his first show on the job and since the band isn’t local, fuck ‘em. Just kidding…it was a very good set, appreciated more, now, since I can control the volume. I really liked One Sleeve and Another Skyscraper. I had heard of these guys from Philadelphia, but had never gotten around to making one of their shows. I remember talking to someone after this set and he was raving about how awesome it was…though he made sure to include the disclaimer, “but they’re not Heroin UK.”

I’ll definitely be open towards seeing these guys again.
