This show isn’t typical of the shows I normally tape, but, then again, this is The Red Room we’re talking about and most shows there throw convention out the window. This show started off with Carson Garhart playing two tracks, each played on instruments Carson made. The first is an instrumental on an electric flute (or recorder). The second is a song played on a guitar, though it was a bit dark and I couldn’t tell if the thing had strings or not. After Carson, we had a storytelling set by Dani Simmonds and Carly Ptak. While Dani told his story, Carly plucked an instrument that looked like it was homemade. She also played some other instruments/tools. Dani spoke during most of his story, though he did play occasionally on a small xylophone. During Carly’s story, I don’t recall that she played any instruments, but Dani accompanied her with some vocals, the xylophone and striking the strings of a ukulele with a mallet. After a brief intermission, Lexie Mountain and Max Eilbacher played a set of electronic noise.

NOTE: The audio player and the downloads all include three blank tracks (lasting a second or two) that I put in to separate the individual sets.

Double Dagger live at Floristree - Baltimore Maryland
Whartscape 2007 - July 21, 2007

By the time Double Dagger took the stage at Whartscape’s Saturday night show, Floristree was swimming with people - sweaty, sweaty people. Feeding off the energy of the crowd, they pulled out all the stops and performed one of the best sets I’ve seen from them. Here they are with: Luxury Condos For The Poor, No Allies, The Psychic

I’ve tried three times so far to upload the flac files for this show, and failed three times. Not sure what the problem is, but I’ll keep trying for those interested in flac.

Insect Factory is Jeff Barsky, ambient guitar/keyboards/effects droning from Silver Spring, MD, outside Washington, DC. While I enjoyed the music of all the bands at this show, this is the set I was most anticipating and, in the end, it was as I expected. Fantastic set!

Instrumental prog rock from Washington, DC. These guys are definitely a band I’d tape more often, unfortunately, this is a rare Baltimore performance and they have tended to stick near DC. This is an excellent set! The band made the odd decision to play in the middle of the room, enveloped by the audience. I think the move paid off and everyone had a great time.

Prog instrumental rock from Baltimore…judging by the way the band played, with their backs to the audience, you’d think they were more into the music than the spectacle of being on stage. And you would be right. These guys just unpacked, jammed with each other and packed up again. Very nice!

These are some of the live recordings I currently have on the hard drive. If you like something, let me know and I’d be more than happy to make the complete show available. Or just take a listen, most of the bands are local Baltimore. I only tape the best bands in town.

Included in the mix are Pariah Piranha, Newagehillbilly, Video Hippos, Baby Aspirin, Chelsea Graveyard, Fishnet Stalkers, The Expanding Man, Small Sur, Ponytail, WZT Hearts, Yeveto, The Expotentials, Stalking Horses, Algebra of Need, Bush Party, Lesbians on Ecstacy, AK Slaughter, Wailsounds, The Prisoner’s Dilemma, Monarch (Wye Oak), Suicide Dolls, Sri Aurobindo, and Oxter.

Baltimore grunge…I’ve seen these guys a few times and I’ve never been disappointed. My personal faves are My Bike and Soldiers Playing Ghosts. The sound at this show was unusually poor, though the band compensated by playing extremely loud.

The Dirty Marmaduke Flute Squad recording can be found here.

I was late arriving, so I was unable to tape Savory James (who I’ve wanted to tape, but still haven’t) or the first band, Butane Variations.
