Show started a bit earlier than I expected, so I was still setting up when the first act came on, a spoken word monologue. Otherwise, I taped all the musical acts. There were some hula hoop dancers as well, but for the most part, it was spoken word or music the whole night. The Expanding Man w/ Shodekeh set was probably my most anticipated set, primarily because I love The Expanding Man and I knew that with Shodekeh involved, Carlos and Tyler would step it up a notch. I also went for the last band, one of my favorite locals, The Degenerettes. As always, you can catch this Degenerettes’ set, as well as other shows, on The Live Music Archive. It had been awhile since I’d seen The Degenerettes, so I was treated to both new material and a new member, bassist Chrissy Howland (no offense to past members, I really like her style).

Also included in this show is a monologue by Terry Barnes of an excerpt of Irwin Shaw’s “Bury The Dead”, a blistering set from Darsombra (not only is he amazing on stage, but Brian is one of the best sound guys in town…check him out behind the board at The Ottobar sometime), Water School played a few tunes (I had never seen these guys as a band, but I swear I’ve seen them all around at various shows). Following the Water School set is a special treat, the debut performance of Kohl Cooke on drums, accompanying his mother Natasha Tylea-Cooke (who ran sound for the show and did an amazing job of it…if you go to a show and you think, “Wow, the sound here is fantastic!“, go up to the soundboard between sets or at the end and thank the sound person not the band). Annie Ewaskio & James Sarsgaard followed with a couple of songs (James is a member of the band Noble Lake, who I have yet to see, but I’ve had the pleasure of catching James solo in the past and I think he’s got one of the best voices for Americana roots). Jed Dodds followed with a set played, first, with a cell phone and then with the musical saw. I thought he was fantastic! Unfortunately, I had to jack the levels up to really capture him and, as a result, the clapping of the audience became distorted (so I had to cut the audience out on a couple of parts). In addition, I inserted some blank tracks to separate the individual sets from each other.

Overall, I had a great time and getting out early on a Thursday night was bonus since I had taped the night before and had to go to work in the morning. If you haven’t checked ‘em out, you should go to the Creative Alliance website and look around. They put on shows involving music, video, film, writings…basically anything creative. I definitely hope to make it out for more of their shows, though the setup of the Patterson isn’t ideal for taping.
