Whether as the duo or the full band, The Expanding Man is guitarist Carlos Guillen and turntablist DJ Tyler Quinn. I saw them back in July at Flux Studios when they played as a full band (bass and drums were recuited) and they were awesome. They were even better this time around as a duo. Continuing in this pattern, The Expanding Man has a show tonight (Dec 15) at The Metro Gallery in Baltimore, as a full band (bass and drums recruited). I probably won’t go to this show, I’ll likely not go out at all, but if I were going out, this is the show I’d be checking out tonight. I think DJ Tyler is also doing a solo set, as well as a set from Andy Bopp.

The only complaint I have about the band is that they don’t have any names for any of their songs. I’m sure alot of their show is improv, though I’m unsure if the whole thing is.

Fancy Follies flier

Last Friday night at Load of Fun reminded me that life is a cabaret. A fun night with theater, music, burlesque and dancing from acts local and non. It was kind of modern and retro all at once, old timey and really postmodern queer.

December 12th, 2007

I’m Kristen Anchor and someday soon I’m going to start posting videos of bands and performance art (from around Baltimore) here in Beatbotsland. I am pumped. If you’d like me to shoot video of your show drop me a line and I’ll see what I can do.

I’ve been a Baltimoron for about 11 years. My day job is running CAmm (Creative Alliance MovieMakers) - booking screenings, workshops, the equipment cage, media lab, etc. I play drums with The Degenerettes (rock n roll) and also have a multimedia/music project called Connie and Bonnie Show (arty farty but still a little rock n roll). I’ve been making short videos for about 8 years or so, most of them pretty silly and short, but I’ve screened stuff at festivals all over and self published a couple of DVD compilations.

A lot of my movies are on youtube and some are on iFilm.com. Might as well air my dirty laundry. My most ‘famous’ video is also the dumbest video I’ve ever made but for like a day it was number 3 on iFilm. It is also seasonally appropriate so here ya go:

I don’t understand what’s going on, but I recently checked the MySpace page of Human Host and the music on their page sounds something like techno or electronic dance music. Is this a joke? I dig electronic music and I like the stuff on their page, but when I ask if it’s a joke, it’s because that music is NOTHING like the music from this show. It’s like two totally different bands.

In this show, from January 12, 2007, Human Host sounds more like the punk band I was expecting. I was having some problems with my gear, so I left after this set, the first of an announced three set show. Maybe the subsequent sets were like the current techno songs, I don’t know.

I guess I’ll find out soon enough because Human Host and The Dirty Marmaduke Flute Squad are playing at Joe Squared this Friday, December 14. Should be a good show, whichever Human Host shows up. I got my fingers crossed for the techno version.

Jakuta & Carl is actually a solo act (Carl is the computer)…I guess you could call it electronic melodrama performance art from Baltimore. This act is better appreciated if you check them out in-person.

The Newagehillbilly is Alex Strama, founder of Baltimore music label MT6 Records. Alex plays with a variety of local bands, including The Wire Orchestra, Heroin UK and Cavemen. When he plays as Newagehillbilly, it’s usually alone and with a variety of electronic devices. In addition, his shirt usually comes off during his set and it wouldn’t be a first if he puked on stage. Newagehillbilly sets are unpredictable and totally off the wall…

Sticking with being unpredictable, Newagehillbilly played a very subdued set this night. Not only did he remain seated throughtout most of the show, but he managed to keep his shirt on and bodily fluids inside. In addition, he left his electronics at home and came with just his guitar (and a slew of pedals). As far as whether people dig his music, I think there are really only two sides: you either love this guy or you hate him with a passion. There’s really no middle ground here. I’m in the camp of those who love his music and style. I’m in the camp of people who think this guy is a genius. And this show is yet another example of how awesome this guy really is.
